Could This Happen Today?

Daytime TV has long been regarded (correctly in my opinion) as an unrelenting crap-fest. Has it been getting worse though? I mean soap operas and daytime talk and so on have been a terrible diversion for the slow-witted or the merely lazy for a long time, but here I found something interesting: At some point in the distant past (probably the late 1970s or early 1980s given the political references), Phil Donahue actually had an entire episode devoted to interviewing Ayn Rand! Don’t believe me, here it is:

Part 5

Anyway, I’ve made my differences with Rand known, and Donahue is a bit of a silly person, but still, what would be the equivalent today? Zizek on the Tyra show? A.C. Grayling on Ellen? For a whole episode, talking about ideas, not doing silly dances or something? I’m not into nostalgia (the hairstyles in the above clip should make anyone against nostalgia) but is there a way to have philosophers participate more in popular culture today?
