Girl Wins Wrestling Match … By Forfeit

On Thursday Joel Northrup gave up any chance that he had of winning the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament after he unexpectedly forfeited the match. Why? Joel found out he was going to be wrestling a girl, Cassy Herkelman.

Joel gave the following scripted response to the media:

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times … As a matter of conscience and my faith I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other high school sports in Iowa.

Apparently John Piper already addressed this issue in 2009 over a similar media story in a post entitled “Over my dead body, son.”

What do you think? The whole thing strikes me as being more than a tad bit unseemly. If you agree or disagree, how would you make your argument? (HT: Takeyourvitaminz)
