Something to consider before leaving your church …

Here are some wise words from CS Lewis that apply to those who would leave their church for the next best thing. I would venture to say that the main reason why people leave churches have nothing to do with “spiritual” reasons (e.g. “I just feel God leading me elsewhere …”) but have more to do with natural disappointment and boredom. People leave churches for the very same reason they leave marriages. We just put up with their excuses for changing churches – hopefully not for their marriages.

“Work hard, then, on the disappointment or anticlimax which is certainly coming to the patient during his first few weeks as a churchman. The enemy allows this disappointment to occur on the threshold of every human endeavor … in every department of life it marks the transition from dreaming aspiration to laborious doing. The enemy takes this risk because he has a curious fantasy of making all these disgusting little human vermin into what he calls His “free” lovers and servants – “sons” is the word He uses …” Screwtape Letters, letter 2.
