Putting Essentials in Their Place

PHARISEE TAXCOLLECTORI think there’s one more caveat that would bear mentioning as we embark on a discussion of the essentials of Christianity. I was watching a talk given by Tim Keller where he made the point that correct doctrine can be an idol. Keller doesn’t say that one shouldn’t attempt to understand the central ideas/beliefs/teachings of Christianity, but rather that this project can give us a false (over)confidence in our own correct belief. If there’s an idol that the pharisees cleaved to, surely it was that of correct doctrine. Even when we approach the question of essentials, we are still dealing in the matter of appropriate doctrine, and appropriate doctrine is not, to my knowledge, sufficient in any theological system inside Christianity.
