Rowan Williams on Prayer

williams-rowan1Sometimes I wonder when the position of Archbishop of Canterbury will be featured on the show Dirty Jobs – it has to be one of the more thankless, troublesome positions in the church universal in the past decade. I was reminded of that when listening to Rowan Williams speak about prayer here, here, and here (HT: Halden). I was reminded of the Dirty Jobs comparison because once again these talks give the impression that the archbishop is a gifted man saddled with an unfortunate job. Williams presents a very thoughtful overview of prayer in a way that makes one feel, if not excited, then certainly sanguine about the topic. It’s a stark contrast to the way in which prayer is usually discussed in protestant circles – which usually takes the form of a guilt trip.
