If you love one another…

Bene Diction has a post up that rather disturbs me and I think bears some examination. It would seem that Exodus International, an international para-church group dedicated to making gay people straight is party to a conference in Uganda proposing compelling people to undergo ex-gay therapy and/or giving them life in prison. What’s more there’s a fair bit of demonizing of the gay community at this conference. On their own site Exodus claims that they reject the notion of responding to homosexuality with “ignorance and fear” and yet this seems to be the sort of thing that they are getting mixed up in this case.

I’ve raised a number of questions on this blog about what it should look like for the church to truly love gays and lesbians. Whatever the answer to that question is, I’m pretty sure it does not involve throwing them in jail, taking away their civil rights or blaming the 1994 Rwandan genocide on the gay community. This is an outright hatred, this is reminscent of the scapegoating that Jews endured for 20 centuries in Europe. We as Christians are doing a piss-poor job of sharing the love of Christ with our neighbours if our neighbours don’t have the right sexual orientation.
