The Purpose-Driven Fatwa

It appears that Rick Warren, post-partisan and help-you-achieve-your-life’s-purpose Rick Warren has endorsed a military assault on Iran. His rationale appeared to be this:

“Well, actually, the Bible says that evil cannot be negotiated with. It has to just be stopped…. In fact, that is the legitimate role of government. The Bible says that God puts government on earth to punish evildoers. Not good-doers. Evildoers.”

Where does it say anything like that at all? It’s a horrendous abuse of Romans 13 to suggest that governments should launch military invasions to stop “evil” of one sort or another.

You may of course have other reasons for wanting to strike Iran – I still disagree with the idea myself – but to suggest that there is a divine command for invading “evil” countries (a category that both Hannity and Warren neglect to define – perhaps because there’s lots of rotten goings-on everywhere) is dangerous and stupid. There are of course some situations where the evil is so severe and so acute that action must be taken, but that’s not the argument that Warren made, was it?
