Post Hoc Explanations

Every time a natural disaster happens, there’s no shortage of religious people of every stripe eager to point out how God is punishing the victims for something that they find disagreeable. Of course these explanations would be more credible had there been some kind of specific warning ahead of time – and an accurate one too, Pat Robertson, I’m talking to you. In a great majority of cases I have a hard time seeing disasters as morality plays where some wicked types get their comeuppance.
