How to win friends and influence people?

Our friend Jay likes to engage others in theological debate. Here he laments that he cannot convince Mormons that their church is, in his words, “a cunning and deceptive cult” that a rational person should consider “complete garbage.” Later on his comment section, he replies to a Mormon interlocutor with this, “Why don’t you try to prove your point not like a mormon and use say…facts?”

My question: is this the most effective means of engaging in discourse? It kind of reminds me of Aesop’s fable of the sun and the wind.

Thoughts?
